Welcome to a special cricket club

We are a small village cricket club based between Swindon, Royal Wootton Bassett, Marlborough and Devizes. We offer a range of cricket for the local community. On Saturday we play in Division 3 of the Wiltshire League, one of the highest placed one team clubs in Wiltshire.

On Sundays we offer a range of friendlies against local clubs that we have good relationships with. We also offer Evening cricket in Division 2 of the Swindon Midweek League. We would normally also run winter nets in the run up to the season and compete in the Swindon Indoor Winter Cricket league. So we offer a variety of cricket formats to every standard of player.

Our short history in Broad Hinton has seen us raise thousands for Ridgeway Breast Care Support Group, and be a focal point for our growing band of Social Member supporters. In the challenging times of the Covid pandemic, we became a meeting point for people seeking company and entertainment. In normal times, we host a quiz night, 6-a-side tournament, and a bi-annual summer ball to raise funds for the club and charitable organisations.

We welcome players of all abilities, and are always on the lookout for umpires, scorers or someone who just wishes to help in maintaining the ground. If you would like more information then please contact our captain Nathan Sheffield on 07795598401 or use our Contact Us page.

Since 2017 we have been supporting the ECB Allstars programme, introducing cricket to 5-8year olds. Each year, despite our small village, we recruit one of the highest numbers of children to this introduction to cricket in the County.

The children and parents enjoy running around on Friday afternoons after school, learning the basic skills of the game, and tucking into the BBQ and bar. Children mostly came from Broad Hinton C of E Primary School, but we also welcomed children from surrounding villages. We hope this will create the next generation of players to keep the club going.

If you need more convincing, read more about our story from the Swindon Advertiser, or The Cricketer's profile of one of the volunteers who keeps the club moving forward. Please come and join us.

Club History

The White Horse Cricket Club (nee Winterbourne Bassett Cricket Club) was formed in May 1983 and renamed in April 2007. The club originally played at the Piggery Field in Winterbourne and from humble beginnings (nissan hut and caravan) the playing and social facilities were considerable enhanced and improved.

Over the years, under the guidance and enthusiasm of Founder and Chairman and Captain, Richard Bays, the ground was further developed and we were able to attract more and more opponents, initially from nearby locations. As word of the improved facilities spread, so did the requests for matches, the fixture list increased considerably and over the years we have hosted many touring clubs as well as teams from London, Bristol, Northampton amongst other towns.

The standard of the cricket has also improved considerably and with the influx of new families and younger players the club has moved from strength to strength. There is still a commitment to play friendly cricket and all weekend matches are based around that ethos. To provide the competitive element, the club entered the Swindon midweek league in 1996 and were immediately successful being crowned as Div 6 champions and Div 5 champions the following year. Promotion was achieved in following years and we went on to be Div 2 champions in 2001, 2005 and 2008 and we are now challenging for honours in the top league.

The club has also run a very successful 6-a-side competition for many years and finally managed to win this in 2005.

A regular feature on the fixture list is the club tour in August. This initially took us to Devon where we were hosted at Torrington. In 1991 the committee decided that an international tour was called for and we went overseas to the Isle of Wight which has been our regular and enjoyable haunt ever since.

The club is now very mindful of its future and began junior cricket coaching in 2006. This has continued successfully and we are now running indoor sessions through the winter as well as summer sessions at the club. We are now reaping the benefit of this tuition as a number of the juniors are now appearing regularly and making good contributions in our weekend matches.

All this enthusiasm hopefully augurs well and we hope that the club goes from strength to strength in the future, further developing the ground and ensuring the game of cricket continues within the community.
